In the of recent terrorists' attacks on facilities in the region and throughout the world, planners, architects and engineers are beginning to re-visit conventional approaches in the design of military and high-security facilities. Increasingly, existing public buildings are also being "hardened" to survive a limited threat. These actions are essential to mitigate the hazardous effects of explosions and impact. In Malaysia, most structures are robust. Important facilities are made to a generally higher degree of robustness than conventional buildings.

In the post 9/11 era, impending requirement are being proposed to provide in the planning and design stages of building and other public/private facilities the necessary protection against man-made hazards.
